This article has clearly undergone extensive editing. No doubt to reduce the chance of character assassination and dial back to the neutrality they had hoped. The subject matter is difficult to describe in neutral terms since the object of the article is to establish HOW big a gambler McCain is as opposed to establishing IF he is a gambler. Out of the box this article has already asserted this was a bad idea - just how bad it is remains to be determined. Even the pastiche of Right wing analysts cited in the article don't provide the lift for an opposing opinion and the article is confined to 'bad' or 'worst' McCain idea yet. This piece covers a limited set of questions well. It leaves out several I'd have liked to know--like why McCain chose Palin and whether the Party supported, or even participated in, his choice. Wallsten pulls off the difficult task of quoting Cindy McCain with a straight face, though I do wish he'd followed up on the quote. This opinion piece has minimal journalistic merit. The authors are not concerned with facts, only with promoting the Democratic Party line. If they wanted they could easily have found out how well Gov Palin was known: for months she was second or third in preferences for VP. Human-rights activist Nat Hentoff wrote a widely published newspaper endorsement of her for VP in May! Lies, such as her belonging to an Alaska Independence Party, are repeated without checking.
