St. Paul Police Conduct Mass Preemptive Raids Ahead of Republican Convention

Armed groups of police in the Twin Cities have raided more than half-a-dozen locations since Friday night in a series of "preemptive raids" before the Republican National Convention. The raids and detentions have targeted activists planning to protest the convention, as well as journalists and videographers documenting police actions at protests. Full Story »

A frightening discussion on the preemptive police crackdowns on peaceful protest groups in the Twin Cities. The two experts were well chosen. But as usual when I read and listen do Amy Goodman, I would have liked to hear from the other side of the issue. Why not give us some more input from the police? It would serve us better to have them on the record justifying the raids.

The news and view presented in the interview show police tactics of confiscating reporting equipment of organizations in which citizens and public action groups film police actions to gather documentation of illegal police activities. The term "preemptive arrests" takes the illegal dogma of bush/cheney offensive war into the domain of domestic policing actions. The efficacy and legality of such police actions is discussed. Important journalism for protecting the freedom of the press. Just as in the Seattle WTO, the police are claiming anarchists at work to try to freeze public outrage.
