Sarah Palin: a bold choice, or a desperate one?

John McCain likes bold, daring strokes. The question that hangs over his selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate is whether it was a bold move or a desperate one.

Early returns on the politics of the selection are good. Senator McCain's choice of Governor Palin, a feisty young reformer from small-town Alaska, performed the signal service of driving Barack Obama's acceptance speech out of the news within hours after it was ... Full Story »

This story is missing quite a bit of information since about Palin, including her initial support for the Bridge to Nowhere. Sounds like it has an agenda to feature Palin and McCain in a good light rather than providing all sides of the issue.

Wherever John Hinderaker goes, his famous quote from the past will follow him: "It must be very strange to be President Bush. A man of extraordinary vision and brilliance approaching to genius, he can't get anyone to notice. He is like a great painter or musician who is ahead of his time, and who unveils one masterpiece after another to a reception that, when not bored, is hostile."—John Hinderaker, Power Line Blog, July 28, 2005. So here we have a puff piece by Hinderaker and his partner, Scott Johnson, trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. In doing so, he repeats all the Republican talking points except the funniest one, from Cindy McCain and Steve Doocy on Fox News. Here's the exchange on ABC's This Week: ... More »

The op-ed starts fairly enough as if the writers are going to answer the question objectively concerning whether GOP VP choice Sarah Palin is a bold or desperate McCain move. Fact is, she did divert attention from Obama and probably was responsible for his less-than-deserved bounce after a historic Democratic National Convention that seemed to unify the party. This yet uninvestigated Republican choice appeared to be strategic in as much as Obama had to name his running mate first because his convention was slated first, and the GOP responded with the candidate best apt to neutralize Joe Biden's attack mode. But even these observations are conjecture, and I never would have published them in a leading newspaper without proof to ... More »

Palin’s story not only stands as an implicit rebuke to Obama’s pretensions, it could help focus attention on McCain’s own very real credentials as a ... More »

The title of the article is a question that may not need to be asked--if the gambit works it won't matter what the reason for the choice was. If you are a supporter of the right you will enjoy and embrace this piece.

This editorial is one of those that pretends balance and states opinions as objective facts. Why are journalists -- even editorialists -- so eager to reach conclusions about Palin? Is the problem the paid-to-opine positions with deadlines to meet? Is it the age we live in, the need for instant definition? This opinion piece is weak because the authors speak before they gather adequate information and deliberate on it judiciously. I'm an expert on Palin compared to these two ignorant cheerleaders.

The article at face value begins as an objective profile of Palin but soon morphs into a tool of manipulation by these conservative writers to yield a typically partisan attack on Obama.

Hmm, hardly worth wasting my time reviewing this. It is pathetic journalism and heavily slanted for McCain and an attack on Barrack Obama. These guys are Republicans or paid by Repugs to write nonsense like this. Do Americans want a really ignorant woman to answer the phone at three in the morning. McCain isn't much better, ha ha.

Being elected President of the free world isn't about "pulling bold stunts" in order to win. It's about good judgment, strong, steady contrast on the issues, and an EVEN TEMPERAMENT. John McCain appears to be spastic, the way he's been running his campaign. He makes me dizzy.

I am glad to see the other reviewers of this piece saw through the saccarine BS that this article tried to pass off. Sarah has been groomed in the Republican-making machine here for years; as director of our own 'Uncle' Ted's 527 prior to election to mayorship of Wasilla. She was elected govenor because former gov. Frank Murkowski was so solidly hated here, all you had to be was NOT Frank. Check out the Mudflat's delightful blog for an insider's view. http://mudflats.wordpress.com/2008/08/29/what-is-mccain-thinking-one-alaskans-perspective/ I especially had a bout of gout over the "knows her way around a fishing boat" line......(breathe deep...) OK, I sit here right at this moment typing on my lap top at the galley table of my ... More »

Agreed that it seems to focus on all the GWB-style "positives" - she might hunt moose, but what has that to do with governance? This seems more a really-she's-fine-don't-think-about-it article than an objective one.

No new insights here, just obvious observations and a GOP slant. As pointed out by others, the story contains well-known factual errors.
