Why CIA Veterans Are Scared of McCain

Many current and former US spies expect a McCain administration guided by neoconservatives to treat them with hostility and mistrust. They also say McCain would likely weaken the CIA by giving broad new spying authorities to the Pentagon, which CIA officials believe is more amenable to giving policymakers the intelligence they want, while being subject to less congressional oversight. Ms. Rozen, of Mother Jones, explores why many CIA veterans are seriously worried what McCain might do to damage and marginalize the CIA, since McCain now sees the civilian intelligence gathering agency as a "rogue organization." It's a serious, thoughtful and discomforting look into the military mind of man who wants to be our president. Voters wishing to be informed should read it.

Important story, not to be missed by those following events in the Middle East closely. Since British and US intelligence had determined that Saddam Hussein did not have a nuclear weapons program, before the invasion of Iraq, the article might have made more clear that the CIA in effect took the fall for the stupidity, and worse, of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. I view John McCain as a stooge of the neocons, so I share the alarm felt by so many CIA and other intelligence professionals at the prospect of McCain in the White House.

I can't wait to read part two. It would seem like the CIA might have some communication problems that may have to be worked on if McCain gets the nod. I hope the second part throws a little more light on this item than just conjecture.

Pres. Eisenhower warned us about the "vast military industry." We didn't heed the warning and this article reveals it. Our military industries agencies are suppose to be ran by citizians (splg) - not by the spooks and military leaders. It's becoming scary in America.

This story is really amusing. If Mother Jones likes the CIA the CIA must be more to the left then I thought. I just thought they were state department liberals. Obviously the CIA plays politics - the absurd report to the effect that the Iranians aren't developing a bomb is a comical example. Obviously McCain knows what is going on and intends to clean it up. Good for him.

The last thing we need is more neoconservatives in office who refuse to listen to intelligence that doesn't match up with their war aims and foreign policy goals. This article provides some interesting background, much of which I hadn't heard before.
