Russia fails to secure regional backing

China has so far adopted a cautious public position towards the events in Georgia and said it was "concerned" about Russia's decision to recognize South Ossetia and Abkhazia. In addition to offering the facts (Russia failed to secure strong backing for its actions in Georgia from its regional partners), good points are made concerning why e.g. China would be concerned not to support breakaway republics.
