The article presents a lot of valid points about the military and the invasion and occupation of Iraq. However, the author mis-frames it as Michelle praising the war, and as the soldiers willfully volunteering to join in the atrocities. Many of the soldiers do volunteer out of patriotism and good intentions, and then are caught up in the military brainwashing and the psychology of war. The personal devastation many experience after the brainwashing wears off can be witnessed in the testimony of returned veterans in venues such as the Winter Soldier testimony. Mourning the empty seats could better be taken as motivation to avoid unnecessary and unwise military involvements, and for the use of diplomacy.
