Anatomy of A(nother) Fiasco

And so, with an absolute minimum of democratic process, the United States of America committed its full prestige and power to the defense of the two former Soviet republics, even though the Russians have repeatedly stated that they regard NATO membership by either country as a direct threat to their own vital security interests. As others have already noted, this is as if China had unilaterally announced a military alliance with Mexico and Cuba. Actually ... Full Story »

I usually like Daily Kos, but this writer should have kept quiet if he's "no foreign policy maven" as he admits and prefers watching women in swimsuits bouncing balls instead. How many times can he explain that Georgia is a country? Or belittle this by calling it "obscure". Sure, snarky commentary about how dumb Americans are is all fine, but get to the point of your article! Once he gets to his point it improves, but I can't say I agree with his analysis. I admittedly did not know much about any of the NATO stuff, so that was interesting. But as someone who is quite wary of Putin and his attempts to hold/gain power by any means necessary - I did not see America's actions as all being motivated by NATO issues & Republican's love of war. This is probably the only time in the last 8 years I have supported sending our military somewhere. Note: this isn't in a knee-jerk antiRusskie Cold war attitude (as he tries to claim), it's from someone of Russian descent not liking Putin reducing civil rights, removing free press, killing/imprisoning those against him. I have to say I don't see things they way he does and I think he's missing the bigger picture in his rush to claim the US acted poorly in rushing to the defense of others being threatened by a larger, more powerful country. If you've studied Russian & Soviet history, you'll remember their love of subsuming whole countries. Maybe I'm leaning to far in that direction but that's what I'm thinking about when I see the news stories, not about NATO agreements.
