This is a worthwhile article, however it tends to oversimplify. Take evolution, for example: While we have plenty of scientific proof that microevolution is a reality (and thus should be taught in our schools), macroevolution is but one theory as to how life developed to its present state. With regard to macroevolution, we have correlative evidence based on observations of the fossil record, however we lack definitive scientific proof that our assumptions about causation are correct. The author quite rightly objects to anti-intellectualism and the Right's sometimes purposeful distortions, however few examples are given of similar distortions promoted by the Left. Definitely written from the "Secular Humanist" point of view, which many thinking people see as just as limited, rigid and prone to ignorance as fundamentalist religious thinking. Need proof? See how a secular humanist reacts when shown Dr. Stephen C. Meyer's paper, "Intelligent Design: The Origin of Biological Information and the Higher Taxonomic Categories." http://www.discovery.org/a/2177
