Why is Vladimir Putin so scared of Georgia?

Given his world view, it's not very surprising that Putin and his entourage have been so openly hostile, not only towards Georgia, but also towards Ukraine and Estonia, the post-Soviet countries that present the greatest contrast to his vision of Russia.

This article from the UK's Telegraph views Putin as a throwback to KGB mentality, paranoid about foreigners and his own people. "He has a deep belief in the power of the state to control the life of the nation." Well now, isn't that true of every powerful nation? There is no accounting for other factors; the US drive for regime changes, USAID and NGO encouragement for breakaway, military training and equipment for new regimes along with promise of NATO expansion, and the economic disaster in Russia created by Western advisers. The ending urges that we argue for "Western values" for others. How well has that been working for the US and Britain of late?
