Georgia's contribution to the escalation of tensions in the region were not completely ignored by U.S. media, but its aggressive actions were often euphemized, as in AP's reference to "a crackdown by Georgia last week" (8/11/08), and were rarely allowed to interfere with the preferred narrative of Georgia as victim of an expansionist Russia. Fair criticism and meticulous sourcing make this article a must read. "FAIR" reminds us that we must not fall back into old modes of thinking as we attempt to describe and evaluate the present conflict in Georgia. And conveniently leaving out important pieces of the puzzle (e.g. Saakashvili's crackdown on dissidents earlier this year and his decision to shell South Ossetian civilians last week ) serves no one. The goal must remain "disinterested humanitarian concern."
