Why Russia's response to Georgia was right

Russia responded to this unprovoked assault on its citizens by launching a military incursion into South Ossetia. No country in the world would idly stand by as its citizens are killed and driven from their homes. Russia repeatedly warned Tbilisi that it would protect its citizens by force if necessary, and its actions are entirely consistent with international law, including article 51 of the UN charter on the right of self-defence. The Russian perspective on the conflict, this piece is worth a read, but bias and missing some information. For instance, Lavrov discusses Russia protecting it's citizens, but fails to explain that these 'citizens' were lived in what was internationally recognized Georgian territory, and were handed Russian passport in the last couple years.

Interesting opinion by the minister of foreign affairs of the Russian Federation. His position, which is clearly articulated, is that Russia had no choice but to intervene militarily to prevent further bloodshed of innocent citizens. Let's compare his viewpoint with those of Georgian officials, to gain a better understanding of the true nature of this conflict. Fortunately, it appears that the situation is now improving, thanks to diplomatic efforts by France's Nicholas Sarkozy and other international mediators, leading to the current cease-fire.
