As Georgia retreats, Russia presses on

Russia brings war deep into Georgia over South Ossetia crisis, reports Moscow sending troops into Abkhazia, another Moscow-backed breakaway Georgian republic

On Sunday, Russia unleashed airstrikes and artillery barrages on Georgian positions in South Ossetia as well as near Abkhazia, another breakaway republic, and in cities of the staunchly pro-U.S. nation, hitting sites in the capital, Tbilisi, and the garrison town of Gori. This article helps the reader to track the fast-moving situation in Georgia, and mentions the apparent linkage between US efforts to build an ABM system in Poland and the Czech Republic even though Vladimir Putin has objected strongly, and the current crisis in Georgia. The tendency of the Bush administration, and the neocons, to be dismissive of legitimate Russian security concerns was almost certain to prompt a response at some point. Additionally, John McCain and his national security adviser have been openly hostile to Russia even though Russia's help is necessary if stability is to be achieved in the Middle East.
