As an Opinion piece this is a valid piece. The reporter verifies that it is his opinion of politics as it is currently being practiced by the Republican Party. He validates the opinion with specific examples of the practices of the Republican Party with regard to various issues. He makes clear in the first line that he regards the practice of a know nothing voter base as a danger to the republic as we want it to be.
