Important story....the start the report seems to stay with the conventional wisdom of MSM ...saying 'underscored what some journalists say is a growing effort by the American military to control graphic images from the war...' and 'News organizations say that such restrictions are one factor in declining coverage of the war...' go uninvestigated ....what does he mean 'growing' and 'one factor'. This article is the tip of the iceberg....the NY times has a much larger responsibility than it cares to fulfill. The full weight,the power of the press is visited sporadicly.....

Government attempts to control the media are many. This represents one of the better attempts to show the reading public what they are not seeing or finding out. If anything the infamous "liberal media" has failed to fight for the right to inform the public.

This is a marvelous piece of reporting. It provides the context for an interview reviewed previously on NewsTrust: http://www.newstrust.net/webx?14@@.105655d1 Kamber and Arango briefly describe the historical friction between war correspondents and the military, including how these matters were handled in previous wars and then they objectively explore the dilemma from the conflicting perspectives. Since American perceptions are shaped by the media coverage we receive, it is essential that this problem be resolved. I was pleased that the piece didn't focus exclusively on the government's censorship for political purposes (though that is certainly real); there are also real concerns for security and for fellow soldiers and ...
