What Will Liberal Bloggers Do If Obama Wins?

James Verini

In an interview with The New Yorker, Pat Buchanan recently described the life cycle of American conservatism this way: "Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket." ...Just as Nixon, Reagan, Gingrich, and Bush depended on developments in new media--direct-mail campaigning, talk radio, cable news--so the new wired Left, with its disheveled assortment of journalist-activists and activist-journalists, ... Goodness! Some of us got up on the wrong side of the bed. As one of those "disheveled" activist bloggers (though my hairdresser wouldn't thank Verini for the description, and I hate these overly broad characterizations), I see plenty left to do. Get rid of Bush Democrats in Congress. Put some spine in the House and Senate. Hold everybody's feet to the fire until they undo the damage of the Bush administration. Reform the system so this doesn't happen again. And loosen the hold of corporate cash on our government. If Verini lacks imagination and commitment, that's not my problem. And hardly spells the end of Netroots activism.

The title struck me as stupid--exactly the same as asking what would Rush (the drug addict) do after Clinton was out of office(?)--he seems to have survived (preaching to his choir). The article does quote some luminaries but it seems to me it is a bit of a fluff piece, asking a question (that may not need to asked) and sort of supplying an answer. For some reason I expected more of Vanity Fair.

I probably shouldn't review this story but whenever I see Buchanan's name it is like a red flag to me. As usual the guy is so far off base it isn't funny, if he believes the so called idiot conservative revolution started with Goldwater. It was Reagan, dummy! Goldwater (at first) was too extremist but he was sure a helluva lot more honest than the Republican thugs who came later. Hard to believe a simpleton like Reagan was responsible for so much or our present day horror. There will always be liberal causes. I think the writer of this story doesn't seem to say much or anything about global warming and the extinction of species happening on a daily basis practically. Almost everything about America needs to be changed and I have ... More »
