Great food-safety article from an AP Medical Writer about investigations into the recent salmonella outbreak. The piece is truly entertaining as the reader learns how these "sleuths" identified the source in Minnesota. Neergaard explains how Minnesota was able to identify jalapenos as the culprit in record time, while it took much longer for the FDA to point the finger at tomatoes--and naming the tomatoes as a "perp" may be an error. The FDA promises to look into what was done ineffectively and to learn from the Minnesota investigators, who succeeded with a system which allowed "speedily comparing the sick and the well and then racing to track food suppliers."
