Where the Ducks Are

The Democrats who will decide the outcome in November are white folks living in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. More numerous than African-Americans and Hispanics combined, they have often voted Republican and, as they showed in the primaries, are wary of Barack, his associations and his attitudes. Putting personal feelings aside (and some degree of nausea as well), I have to disagree with my fellow reviewers about the quality of this piece. Yes, Roland, go ahead and rate me one bullet for disagreeing with you. Pat Buchanan (puhhh, puhhh) has written a coherent, supported argument for the ultra-conservative perspective of how to win this election. There is every reason to believe that McCain would benefit from appealing to the ultra-right wing of his party. Obama is much more likely to take the moderate Republicans and Independents than is McCain likely to take the moderate Democrats. McCain might be very well served to appeal to what we liberals consider voters' "worst instincts." I certainly don't have any affection for ... More »

Pat Buchanan, one of the primary advocates for the nastiest wing of the GOP, exposes the Party's dark underbelly--or maybe I should say the lily-white underbelly. Why bother with those colored folks? We've passed all these laws that discriminate against them. Why should they vote for us? But they should make the white folks happy! For starters Pat, people's capacity for stupidity and delusion never fails to amaze me. So McCain might get votes from those he's hurt. And it never hurts to ask. Second, not every white person appreciates GOP racism. I don't, for example. And not all of us see excluding others from education, healthcare, and marriage as a benefit to us. It is just possible that white voters in Ohio might be bright ... More »

This opinion piece has minimal journalistic merit. The author presents his own personal views without providing any of the many facts that contradict what he is saying. There is no effort to provide balance or adequate sourcing.

My mouth fell open while reading this and then I noticed who wrote it, ha ha. If there is anyone in America more out of touch with things in this country than John McCain, it just has to be poor, sad, old Pat Buchanan. Heck, I thought this silly man was either retired or dead! He's a right wing creature and always has been, although he tries to appear to be in the middle of political thinking. It's as if he and thousands like him have no idea what kind of an election this is going to be. Anyone who would vote for John McCain because he is supposedly some kind of war hero and is against everything they believe in or at least realize what the criminal Republican administration has done to them for most of the past eight years, is ... This article provides insight into the political calculations made by any major politician, even the liberals' beloved Obama. It reminds us that these politicians are out to win a race -- which means to gain votes, not love. This is actually only a medioce article from Pat Buchanan. He is usually much sharper than this (except when he gets on a pro-religion or anti-gay theme, at which his brain seems to sadly turn to mush.) What Buchanan seems to fail to recognize is that McCain *has* to appear before the NAACP unless he wants to invite comparisons with the way Bush snubbed them. So McCain pays the NAACP a visit early in the campagn, when his time is less valuable. I'd be surprised if he even remembered who they were -- much ... More »
