Carbon play an act of belief

CANBERRA and the Catholic Church have had transformative shows of faith on display this week. World Youth Day in Sydney may look far more spectacular but the Rudd Government is professing its conviction to fight the evils of climate change with almost as much moral certitude.

The prospect of sacrifice for the common good always looks more attractive the more distant it is, particularly in an economic climate that suddenly looks a lot more frightening.

Still, the immutable law of politics is that governments can win through if they persuade people there are long-term benefits to be had, no matter how tough it seems in the short term. Full Story »
