Iraq Leader Maliki Supports Obama's Withdrawal Plans

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki supports US presidential candidate Barack Obama's plan to withdraw US troops from Iraq within 16 months. When asked in and interview with SPIEGEL when he thinks US troops should leave Iraq, Maliki responded "as soon as possible, as far as we are concerned." Balanced report that doesn't draw any definitive conclusions about which candidate would be more effective in dealing with Iraq, yet implies that, based on Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's remarks, Barack Obama's platform is more aligned with the vision of the Iraqi government than McCain's more open-ended proposition. A timely piece given the signals from the Bush administration over the past few days: that they may set a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq; that they will increase troops in Afghanistan; and that they have sent a top level diplomat to speak with Iranian officials.
