MoveOn at Ten

MoveOn staffers echo Exley's characterization, stressing that whatever MoveOn's ideological sensibility ("pragmatically progressive," one offered), it's a product not of its staff's outlook but of the views of its members. "Some groups have a really strong ideological substrate," says organizing director Justin Ruben. "We tend to not be that way.... We believe strongly in the wisdom of crowds, giving people the ability to make choices together. They'll ... Full Story »

Informative article about MoveOn, how it came about, its current role in the democratic process, and what lies ahead for this popular civic engagement group. This special report is well-researched, based on extensive factual evidence from multiple sources, and offers helpful insights about the political and cultural impact of this organization. Though I would have liked to hear more viewpoints from the right and the center, the article is generally fair and doesn't appear to take sides. Thoughtful, interesting report on an important topic.

As a MoveOn member, I found this article to be insightful, well researched and an accurate assessment. MoveOn has done an impressive job organizing local communities. I was never sure after an event if we made a difference but many of the people I know in my community I met through MoveOn and we continue to organize events using the tools that MoveOn taught us. MoveOn should be commended for how easy they made it to host a vigil or house party using thoughtful easy to follow instructions. Some individuals became upset with MoveOn when they supported Obama over Clinton but the decision was reached democratically. Good article.

This is an excellent, in-depth look at an organization that changed our political landscape. Both the positives and the negatives from both critics and advocates are explored and probed. I am one of those progressive whose support for MoveOn has soured over time. However, this article helped me put my own ambivalence into proper perspective. The progressive movement needs more self-analysis like this, and we need to give the same kind of impartial scrutiny to groups on the "other side."

Good article on MoveOn.org--how it came to be, where it's at at ten years of age, its problems, and where it may be going.
