Former bandit joins Indian Justice Party

Former bandit Seema Parihar, who ruled the ravines of the Chambal for 18 years before surrendering before a court in 2000, kicked off her political career on Saturday by joining the Indian Justice Party (IJP).

Ms. Parihar is likely to be one of the star campaigners for the IJP during the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh next year.

And inside glimpse into the peculiarities of Indian democracy. It should be noted Seema Parihar follows in the footsteps of other "bandit queens" who entered politics in India- that context would have been helpful.

Beyond the story's obvious "people interest" - a female bandit turning into a politician - the story reveals a deliciously absurd aspect of politics that crosses national boundaries. The story also reports that a Gandhian is joining the Indian Justice Party at the same time. A former bandit and a Gandhian in the same party! The sad thing is, of course, that the former bandit got much more press coverage.
