This is a very poor opinion piece. Lowry takes the extensive findings of research which appeared in a book, draws unsubstantiated conclusions based on the information (while dismissing the conclusions of the authors) and then criticizes both McCain and Obama for supposedly not addressing the issue. "Assimilation" is a controversial, complex and subjectively defined concept, and the factors which influence assimilation cannot be distilled into the soundbite Lowry hoped to provide. By Lowry's reasoning, no immigrants should have entered the US since the pilgrims; come to think of it, the pilgrims failed to "assimilate" into the dominant Native American culture--they shouldn't have lived here either!
