John Pilger: There Is a War on Journalism

(Multimedia) It's been a week since Rolling Stone published its article on General Stanley McChrystal that eventually led to him being fired by President Obama. Since the article came out, Rolling Stone and the reporter who broke the story, Michael Hastings, have come under attack in the mainstream media for violating the so-called "ground rules" of journalism. It would be very difficult to classify an article that unabashedly rips open the curtain concealing the "Wizard" as anything else but good journalism. The interview was focused, doesn't meander along commercially convenient by-ways or pull punches on 'underwritten' journalists that have for promises, power or payola put down their pens and began their reporting using pastels. The article leaves the reader disturbed and curious.

It is quite comical how different 'newsy' entities have reported on the Hastings' report to best suit their corporate appellation. With the cooperation of all media, politicians are free to utter any crackbrained, off-the-wall statement their empty little minds can ... More »

The interview opens with a montage of media types condemning Rolling Stone, the gist of which removes all doubt about the credibility of the interview.

A strong defense of the proper role of journalism, and a critique of the mainstream embedded infotainment pretense of news.
