Iraq's Oil Surge

Here's a thought experiment: Assume that Iraq's democratic government declared it was nationalizing its oil industry, a la Venezuela or Saudi Arabia, while excluding American companies from the country. How do you think U.S. politicians would react? With angry cries of "ingratitude" and "this is what Americans died for"? Full Story »

This op-ed piece was written by a Mammon-worshiping editorialist for The Wall Street Journal and predictably raves about the new oil deals signed by Iraqis and American oil companies. There is no mention of such deals providing evidence the Iraq war was an American imperialist quest for oil from the begininng, and concerns that the deals will deepen political tensions in Iraq and put our military men and women in greater danger are dismissed out of hand. To the WSJ editorialist, the deals will lead to more oil and money, which is unquestionably good, good, good.

It's not journalism at all. It's just name calling over a difference of opinion. While they are entitled to their opinion, I refuse to call it journalism unless they support it with something--anything. They do not. So it's just invective and schoolyard name calling with those who disagree with them.

Characterizes the Democrats' letter and new oil bidding fairly well, but the analysis is completely unsupported. Begins with a strawman attack.

This opinion piece has considerable journalistic merit. It brings out several important facts about the rapidly improving economy in Iraq, and about the shifting and contradictory positions of left-wing Democrats on the liberation of Iraq and self-government for the country.

The author states that "America would react with cries of ingratitude if Iraq nationalized its oil supply; 'This is what Americans died for?'" So, if the Iraqis don't nationalize their oil, giving the access and profits to the US and European oil companies, this is the reason our brave American soldiers died?!?! They died to allow the US Oil companies to take over the Iraqi oil industry? With the announcement of these no-bid contracts, the full intentions of the Bush/McCain/Cheney regime has become fully apparent. Blatant greed has run this administration. We cannot stand 4 more years of this.
