Salmonella signs point to peppers

A likely source of jalepeno contamination is the water used to irrigate plants or wash peppers after they're picked, said Robert B. Gravani, a food science professor at Cornell University.

One health official involved in the investigation said "loose ends" are keeping tomatoes under suspicion, but the official said they could be accounted for easily. The official said evidence is "piling up" that indicates that jalapenos are to blame. Full Story »

Article is an update on the 12th week (3 months) since salmonella was reported that may be related to tomatoes. Interesting information on how tomatoes were originally pinpointed as being the likely suspect - statistics. No contaminated tomatoes have been found. Hard to understand how after 3 months they cannot determine the source of the contamination. This story raises serious questions regarding food safety and reporting. Earlier this year the USDA kept saying no one became sick from eating meat from downed cows but one wonders how the government can say that if they cannot trace the source for food borne diseases.
