`I'm not familiar with Mr. Woods work; but if this piece is any indication it 's not good. Back when General Petraeus had been nominated to head the U.S. Central Command, one of the important issues raised was how the war in Iraq was affecting the war in Afghanistan. I'm not going to go back to look for Petraeus' analysis at that time, but here's part of the answer: It's hurting us in what to many military analysts is the more important battle. That's important, and it's not mentioned in this article. The Marine Corps, up until this announcement, has been able to do a better job of rotating their trooops through combat with sufficient time off to recover from combat fatigue on a regular schedule than the Army has been able to do. Now they're starting down the same slippery slope the Army did. That's important news, and it's not covered here. Last month, for the first time, US casualties in Afghanistan exceeded those in Iraq. That's important news, and it's not covered. To me, this was a very one sided piece. And as a veteran who once counted the days to DEROS in Vietnam, I found his treatment of the concerns of the troops and their loved ones about being in harm's way for even one day longer than originally told to be insulting of the readers intelligence. The Pentagon said over and over again that there would be no extension. It's never a good idea to go back on your word to soldiers.
