Oh, no, they told us, Iraq isn't a war about oil. That's cynical and simplistic, they said. It's about terror and al Qaeda and toppling a dictator and spreading democracy and protecting ourselves from weapons of mass destruction. Bill Moyers and Michael Winship have figured it out. The bottom line is the bottom line, they say. Iraq was not about defense, nor democracy, nor morality. Following the money revealed a less attractive truth. It was about oil, after all. The energy industry has conducted US foreign policy for years and their investment has turned out well -- for them.
