Anyone giving much thought to the grotesque squandering of US taxpayer dollars on "defense" should read this article, mayber more than once. The US spends almost as much on "defense" as the rest of the world combined. This is insane, and it is putting national security at risk.

Excellent journalism. This is a model for the often used, but rarely carried out imperative "follow the money" (because it takes super dedication, patience and perseverence). If one understands and accepts the vastness of the body of work involved, and the resistance to access of the profiteer's covert data, Mr. Turse has provided a "benchmark". Be it impossible, in limited space and time, to address even a small fraction of the financial "black holes" in the military complex, Mr. Turse has identified a sufficient number of significant gold nuggets to justify a general conclusion about the clandestine pillage and plunderage in process by corporations at the public trough (the big picture). This is what investigative journalism is supposed to be. Exhaustively detailed, informative, and broad in scope. The author supports the headline and presents an extremely complete picture of how war has taken over our government and our economy. Warning: Depressing. Do not read without chocolate, wine, or other stimulants.

If one is going to wrest control of the nation from the military industrial media complex, and return control to the people, one must become familiar with the many members of the military industrial media complex. This article identifies some of the huge benefactors of military spending.
