Russia returns to Afghanistan, on request

There is a rich irony in the fact that the U.S., which fought a proxy war against the Russian forces in Afghanistan from 1979-1989, is now asking Russia to help NATO combat the same mujahideen who were armed and trained by Washington to fight the Russians. Full Story »

This is a pointed assessment of Russia's decision to lend logistical and military support to the U.S., NATO and Afghan forces—a topic I've noticed has gone somewhat underreported in Western press. Sheds light on some of the strategical and diplomatic complexities of the war in Afghanistan.
