Posted by Fabrice FlorinInsightful video report on how lessons from the Burning Man art festival could help improve our cities in the 'real world.' This interview with executive director Larry Harvey highlights five Burning Man guiding principles that could also make metropolises thrive: ban cars, invite self-reliance, rethink commerce, use shame to foster virtue -- and encourage art.
A good idea that's not well executed. Doesn't really provide strong evidence for some of the points, and doesn't do a good job of explaining how the lessons could be adopt by cities (other than lesson 1 - get rid of cars).
Entertaining, but superficial look at Burning Man. I don't see any effort to show another point of view to counter that of the director of Burning man or any discussion of why these things might not work in a real city.
I particularly enjoy the parallel between the actions of the lamp lighters and civic duties of a city...be them symbolic or necessary. I feel that each person/camp being responsible for their own trash within the city is something that definitely should be carried from Black Rock City into the real city/world is very enlightening...self reliance, definitely. Culture values should be rethought throughout the globe. "icy pandemonium of extraneous wills"...is a good cry for the wake up call needed in all of society. BRING IN THE ARTISTS...definitely.
