Bogus narratives

The political media, particularly the national political media, particularly the national electronic political media, exist in a vast echo chamber. Someone picks up or makes up a concept-like thought and he says it out loud and everyone else hears and repeats it, and it soon takes on a life of its own, separate from its existence in reality-based reality.

Thoughtful report about the news media's tendency to propagate misinformation, and/or 'subtle and believable distortions.' Though this is an opinion piece, which is not explicitly substantiated by factual evidence or multiple sources, the author's argument is well-reasoned and provides helpful insights on this important topic. And I applaud his recommendation to build defenses against these 'bogus narratives' that are not partisan in nature, as stated in this excellent quote: 'Always ask yourself: In the real world, how outraged would I be by this? This is a particularly important question to ask if the tale concerns a candidate with whom you do not happen to agree. Reality should always trump partisanship, or we will go mad.'

this opinion addresses an important media issue in this campaign--how many unreal, somewhat real, unimportant, etc. items get picked up and amplified throughout media systems and then take on a life of their own within the systems. in the process, the public is not served with important information, and is in fact distracted from real info. the writer uses only one example, and he would have made the point more succinctly with more examples, and less of himself
