Gov. Charlie Crist's stunning reversal of his position on drilling for oil and gas off the Florida coastline is all about politics and political ambition. Sadly for the governor and state residents, the abrupt switch has very little to do with sound energy policy.

Good editorial as far as it goes, for it exposes some of the motives behind the flip-flops; but it could have offered more context. It might have been useful to mention that Big Oil is McCain's biggest corporate source of campaign funds, and that the GOP, for all its TALK about energy independence, has blocked every concrete proposal for promoting it while offering nothing positive. Pseudo-centrist, pseudo-environmentalist Christ and McCain are dancing to Big Oil's tunes.

This editorial demonstrates how a regional newspaper can, and should, impact the political discourse. This is a national political topic with substantial implications for Florida. Failure by major newspapers to play this vital role in our political system over the years has greased the skids for our government to enter into some of its greatest blunders. Kudos to the Miami Herald for taking a prompt, firm stand on this issue.
