Yet while it would be hard to categorize him as a doctrinaire Republican or conservative, Mr. McCain appears to have ceded some of his carefully cultivated reputation as a maverick. Full Story »

Although the language itself isn't the most interesting to read, I'm impressed by how toned-down and straightforward this piece is. This sort of didactic journalism, designed simply to lay out the facts, is under-appreciated and hard to come by.

For one who reads a lot of political materials, this is not an article packed with news, but for those who don't, yet keep hearing how McCain is running as Bush III, this article is just what the doctor ordered. The author nicely takes his time in carefully exploring the key ways McCain's positions are different from, similar to or identical with those of Bush. I recommend this general yet nuanced examination. It will likely have to be updated soon, however, as McCain continues to change his mind and positions as he searches to find the policy mixture that will lead to victory in the fall.

Story goes issue by issue in comparing and contrasting McCain's past and current views to George W. Bush. Article touches on topics ranging from taxes, insurance, judicial appointments, abortion rights, gay marriage, the Iraq war, diplomacy, environment, etc. The general tenor is that McCain's policies would be much like Bush's but with a few tweaks. The question remains whether these tweaks are compelling enough to differentiate himself in an election climate that seems overwhelmingly to favor change.

Informative article outlining McCain's positions on key issues and indicates when he has changed his position. The article points out that McCain continues to adjust his position on many topics and also reverses himself on others. The title could be How Close McCain Is to Bush Depends on the Day. Outlines his changing position on Iraq, immigration, torture, illegal wiretapping of Americans, and tax cuts. If the country wants change it is hard to know what McCain stands for and believes in with his continuous adjustment and changing positions.

I found this article to do an excellent job in showing the ways in which John McCain compares and contrasts to George W. Bush touch on all of the major issues. The reader is able to draw his or her own opinions as to whether a McCain presidency will continue to be more of the same or will move our country in a different direction.
