Many Gitmo detainees had flimsy ties to terror

Little or no threat, dozens or more men were imprisoned at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp on the basis of revenge, bounty payments, or fabricated evidence.

An eight-month McClatchy Newspapers investigation in 11 countries on three continents has found that Akhtiar was one of dozens of men -- and, according to several officials, perhaps hundreds -- whom the United States has imprisoned wrongfully in Afghanistan, Cuba and elsewhere on the basis of flimsy or fabricated evidence, old personal scores or bounty payments. There was a time, I have heard, when a number of newspapers did the kind of good journalism that the McClatchy Newspapers do now. This is the information we need to be responsible and informed citizens and voters. Most people do not have the time or real interest to pursue facts so they read the local paper and watch a popular TV reporter repeat the spin of those with a vested interest in hiding their misdeeds.
