McCain, Obama Clash on Economy

Candidates' Tacks Differ Sharply

... despite assertions by both candidates that they would take non-ideological approaches, their views on the economy will mirror the divides of most recent presidential races. Obama's criticism of McCain for backing tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations at the expense of the middle class is traditional Democratic language, while McCain is assailing Obama for proposing tax increases and excessive spending, a charge Republicans have launched against ... This article was superbly executed by three contributors. The inclusion of the AP Video was also balanced and supported the article. The article remained true to its title - it reported on the substance of the clash and the supporting ideas. The color provided by enumerating the supporting cast was also very informative and contributed to the depth of the differences between the candidates and provides the readers with the opportunity to view old and new facts in an interesting and compelling manner instead of creating interest by imposing opinion where fact should reside.

This is an even-handed, well-sourced story about what the candidates are saying about economics. What it doesn't include is information about what the candidates have done in this area--how they've voted, what bills they've drawn up, etc. Obama cosponsored a bill to close tax havens. What has McCain done? That sort of coverage would give us more insight than a he said, he said approach. Only a fool judges a person by his words.

Yes it is good journalism. It presented a fair assessment of each of the candidates viewpoints about a very important subject. It clearly defines the position of the two candidates. It is alarming that McCain has so flip flopped and is willing to continue not taxing the wealthy. Are the middle class and working poor the only ones to support our government. His proposal is audacious. The article covered the subject very well. I wish they could have given even more information as to how the 2 men voted or supported various bills.

I felt that the article was somewhat biased towards McCain by the way in which his and Obama's positions were characterized. Eg., Obama's economic policy is dismissed as " traditional Democratic language," while McCain is described as "assailing Obama for ... tax increases and excessive spending," which I believe contributes to this mystique of McCain the Warrior.
