A culture war, literally

I don't know who coined the term “culture war” to describe our political divisions, but I'm reasonably sure he or she intended it only as a figure of speech

It feels like something else in light of a new report from the Intelligence Project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors extremist groups. “Terror From the Right” is a listing of bombers, killers, would-be assassins and insurrectionists motivated by anger over abortion, ... It is opinion that that shows the violent differences in America that weakly links it to terrorism.

There is a culture divide in this country but there has always been a culture divide that is expressed in violent behavior.

This piece is superb. It says what needs to be said about -- and to -- the "unhinged and the entitled."

Back when the Muslim extremists in Iraq were lopping off heads, folks wondered over here why Muslim moderates were not speaking out and acting to curb the extremists. These days, I've wondered the same about our moderate Republican friends. Surely they can at least speak out against their party's certifiable nut cases and outright haters, can't they? Our collective silence gives these lowlifes license.

Leonard Pitts explores the latest report from the Southern Poverty Law Center on "Terror From the Right", asks about terror from the left and links findings to today's well publicized "culture war." This is a calm, well written and well argued opinion piece.

I admit that I am a Leonard Pitts fan. While he is predictably liberal in outlook, his columns are always well written and well reasoned and are never nasty. He has a knack for capturing the obvious but avoiding the cheap shots.

what is informative here is the level and degree of anger, revenge, plotting that is documented regularly by the southern poverty law center. not stated here but worth noting is a similarity between those who react violently to the changes over many years in this nation's 'culture' and those in the middle east or any other world region who feel the same way in theirs, and react with extremism. it's good to call attention to this in our country.

This gives some depth to the racism argument and a fuller explanation of the seemingly overblown anger we've seen lately.

I wonder if the non-white people here when our forefathers invaded their land felt the same?

many people “feel that this is no longer the country that their Christian white forefathers built, that they have been robbed, that this isn’t the world they grew ... More »

An interesting point, comparing terror on the right to terror on the left. To say there is no balance there would be a massive understatement.
