Veterans group to launch attacks on John McCain

McCain often cites his service in the military as evidence of his dedication to and support of his fellow veterans. But when some of these groups were crediting the two presidential candidates for their support of important issues to veterans, McCain came up short.

The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of American gave Senator McCain a grade of "D" for his voting record against veterans, while in contrast Senator Obama received a grade of "B+." The ... Full Story »

This is a peculiar article. It seems to deplore the attacks on McC by Vietnam Veterans against John McCain as "truly unconscionable, particularly when that person is running to become president of the United States"--a completely illogical position. What the article actually does is give voice to the Vets charges against McCain, including the very serious charges that he turned traitor in captivity. A crafty way to broach a still taboo topic.

This newspaper is owned by Freedom Communications, which owns TV stations in medium markets across the country. None of their news operations are of note, and they have a distinct right lean to them. I know their news directors. This story was quite good and important. I wish the writer would have sourced what Huff Post article the anti-McCain group was referring to. Or have said that they did not source their allegation about illegal aliens with drivers licenses.

This is a good story. It is well reported. The writer appears to be a supporter of John McCain and she is reporting on Veterans groups that are highly critical of his performance in behalf of veterans. One group in particular it seems quite ironic that they would attack McCain since they were very instrumental in burying John Kerry. As a casual observer I would think McCain would be avidly supported by Vets after all his whole case for the Presidency is national security.

I learned a lot from this article. I've criticized McCain for not supporting a generous version of a new GI Bill, as well as for his unstinting support of each Bush budget request for Iraq and his '100 years' casual-seeming comment. As a former military officer, I have nothing but the highest respect for McCain's conduct as a POW, especially his refusing special treatment by his captors as his father was CINCPAC at the time of his captivity. I also knew some groups opposed to McCain in general were spreading ugly rumors about his mental stability after being subjected to torture. But while Vietnam Veterans against McCain allege he cooperated extensively with his captors in propaganda efforts against the United States and its ... More »

I am not familiar with this particular publication, but I was impressed by the sheer LACK of substance here. I did appreciate that they pointed out McSame's dismal voting record in favor of vets as compared with Obama's, but I was disgusted by the lack of objective analysis of the (admittedly awful) Vietnam Vets against McCain's substantive claims, e.g. that McSame in captivity collaborated with his captors. It would have been a much better story if they would have tried to deal with the group's claims on their merits instead of just attacking them. Pretty bad.

It's a very good story and it mostly supports what I have heard about McCain. There has been plenty of innuendo about his collaborating with his Viet captors and think that is true, but probably was the same for many or most of the captured Americans. I think McCain is a hypocrite and there is nothing heroic about what he did in Vietnam. Bombing cities from high altitudes is rather cowardly, although it takes some courage to do that I suppose, but no way could he avoid killing plenty of innocent men, women and children. I think fair is fair and he should get a dose of what they gave Kerry and other brave Democrats who fought for America. I don't why Republicans are such cowards, but most of them are, although they love waving ... More »

My problem with this article starts from the beginning of it - a daughter of a military family is trying to defend the "honor" of John McCain against the "same people" that "famously “swiftboated” John Kerry in 2004". Did she wrote a SIMILAR article in 2004?? I doubt it. From my perspective the McCain years at "Hanoi Hilton" should be part of the PUBLIC record and debate it VIVIDLY by ANY groups of people, specially the Vietnam veterans. I have seen clips from Senate auditing the POW issues where McCain is just trying to quite the lady representing POW families in the most rude way. If I am not mistaken he killed HR 3603, Truth Accountability Bill, although it passed the House with a vote of 401 to 0.. These are facts but ... More »

This commentary piece is interesting in that the columnist says she's completely against the planned "swift boating" of John McCain by a certain veterans group but then proceeds to give them the floor for her entire column. Why?

It is clearly fair to question McCain's commitment to the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan based on his current votes and policies, in light of his self described "war hero" status. So in that sense, the author does describe the current veterans' opposition to McCain's policies. The Vietnam Veterans Against McCain, while apparently distasteful to the author, may provide valuable insight into McCain's character. It remains to be seen, however whether the public will learn the true level of McCain's complicity in the collaboration with North Vietnam while a POW. Because McCain's recent commercials seem to make an issue of his military service, all aspects of that service needs to be examined.
