Surely, nothing beats "video verite." I actually watched this speech on CSPAN because I appreciate the message in the film itself, sans commentary, yet I can also, likewise, appreciate Candy Crowley and David Gergen, to be sure. This was an outstanding speech, in fact, so tremendous that I wondered if Ted Sorenson had been summoned to Washington this past week. I was waiting for an exhortation to 'ask what your country can do for you.' To Sen. Clinton's credit, she delivered it with warm eloquence, grace under pressure, and heartfelt passion. One never had a sense of forced words or phrases. It spoke to the glass ceiling for women in America, now shattered--or cracked-- by her candidacy, and it was heartwarming to see the dads and moms in the audience hoisting their daughters atop their shoulders to see this part of history in the making. It was breathtaking, utterly exhiliarating, profoundling uplifting. As an Obama supporter, I chose not to vote my gender, but I can't entirely fault those who did, even if it, in actuality, isn't the most logical way to decide a Presidential contest. Yet, I get it completely. The ultimate eloquence, the jaw-dropper line of the speech was: "When you hear people say, 'what if' or 'if only,' I say, don't go there; every moment spent looking backward keeps us from moving forward." I was deeply moved by that line and felt that she finally threw down the barriers of politician-speak and just let rip a tidal wave of FOR REAL-ness. I couldn't help but wonder where this person had been hiding all these months. Granted, I still would have supported Barack Obama, but I wouldn't be feeling the wee bit of guilt I feel right now about having had such negative thoughts about her and Bill for so many months. If this is an indication of how they will campaign for Obama in the months to come, the Democratic Party will have to reinstate JFK's celebratory theme song Happy Days Are Here Again. Between these two speakers, McCain's weaker voice might be difficult to be heard.
