Katrina Kerfuffle

McCain claims he 'supported every investigation' into the government's role regarding the hurricane, when in fact he twice voted against an independent commission

McCain was asked by a New Orleans reporter why he voted twice against an independent commission to investigate the government's failings before and after Hurricane Katrina, and he incorrectly stated that he had "voted for every investigation."

McCain actually voted twice, in 2005 and 2006, to defeat a Democratic amendment that would have set up an independent commission along the lines of the 9/11 Commission. At the time of the second vote, ... Full Story »

Informative fact-checking of a recent statement by McCain and his claim of 'negative attacks' from the Obama campaign. In both cases, the author has done careful research to verify these statements and provides helpful answers based on ample factual evidence from multiple sources. Excellent journalism, which provides much-needed background information.

Was one of the bills riddled with pork as McCain defends? The report speaks to the Clinton bill not having pork, but is ambiguous as to whether or not this is the bill McCain was talking about. This is but one instance in this piece where an implied, plausible allegation is made but then the author fails to provide an exhaustive analysis of all possibilities. This leads me to question the fairness of the piece. One of the problems McCain will face in this election is a long history of Senate votes that can be construed to the purposes of journalists. Kerry faced this too. I'm a liberal Democrat and an Obama supporter, but I hope we at NT can keep a keen eye on attempts to use McCain's Senate career against him in ways that may ... More »

Outstanding fact-check of McCain's assertion about supporting Katrina investigations. Well sourced, well-presented.

An exceptionally well-balanced, thorough, and well-sourced story. The only way it could have been improved would be if it addressed the implication from the Obama campaign that McCain often forgets his voting record.

This is a report about a meeting in Louisiana McCain is asked about his voting record. He lies or doesn't even know how he voted. This is a fact check article it sets the record straight and it not very pretty.

The only aspect of the interview that the article doesn't mention is McCain's inconsistency in saying he "supported every investigation" into the government's role regarding the hurricane, and his saying "I also voted against one of the bills that came down that was loaded with pork barrel projects that had nothing to do with New Orleans too. It had billions for projects and programs that had nothing to do with the recovery of the city of New Orleans."

This article provides great sources so readers can see for themselves how McCain voted. It might be a good idea for the fact checker to point out that McCain, when confronted with his falsehoods, responded by trying to put the spotlight on Obama’s pledge rather than on McCain’s falsehood. This is a red herring. There is even an ad populum fallacy in all of this: *Obama claims that McCain did not tell the truth about voting for the independent commission to investigate how and why the government failed in dealing with the devastation of Katrina; *Obama has pledged to run a campaign on hope and change; therefore *The American people are more sick and tired of Obama breaking his pledge than they are of McCain not telling the truth.

The short title misses the big picture, and the author calls McCain's outright lie a "gaffe," but otherwise it's a great article.

Thorough, well documented, well sourced, and highly objective. I would guess that some would refer to an analysis like this as liberal or left which is incredibly frustrating because this is simply a fact-based analysis. McCain voted against it twice but denied/didn't remember this and thus responded inaccurately. This is the truth, not liberal vs conservative - the antithesis of the fox news and similar organizations.

This is a good, straight forward report. Facts are facts and the voting records are there for everyone to see on this issue and every other one. As to the accusation that Obama is launching "negative" attacks, here again what is shown is his criticism of policies, backed up by records and the facts rather than personal attacks. It seems as though crying wolf will be the McCain campaign strategy as there is little else they can do.

factcheck.org is the most accurate non-spin zone that I know of. It is fully sourced, footnoted and unbiased except for its stated intention to vet all representations for their accuracy/truthfulness. Put it on your "favorites" tab. If the standards factcheck applied to all public pronouncements were employed by the people making those pronouncements we would have a lot less dissembling in the public forum. One is reminded of Pinocchio - what big noses they would all have. As is once again shown here - McCain "misspoke" about his positiion on investigating the Katrina recovery (ongoing) nightmare. Factcheck.org - every time a winner.

This article basically catches Sen. McCain either mis-remembering his votes, or lying about them. It also shows considerable hypocrisy to make such a show of visiting New Orleans to show concern about Katrina while also voting twice NOT to fund independent investigations.
