Opportunity ahead for McCain among women voters

Angling for the backing of women voters, the Obama campaign has created a wide array of support groups: Prime Time Women for Obama, Boomer Women for Obama, Middle-Aged Women for Obama, Women over 50 for Obama and even Obama Mamas.

But after wrapping up the Democratic nomination in a long and bruising battle against a popular female politician, Sen. Barack Obama will begin his general election push trying to attract women voters who feel a keen ... Full Story »

The article is speculative on what might occur with the Clinton supporters and is not very newsworthy. What would make a better story is to review other elections to see what percent of voters crossed party lines because they were disappointed in the outcome of a primary and voted for someone who was so different from their preferred candidate. The speculative articles on Clinton supporters are debasing to women assuming that women will cross party lines to vote for someone who is against a women's right to choose, against universal health care, against ending the war in Iraq, against the GI Bill, against equal rights for gays, against environmental reform, against ending torture when Clinton supports these key issues.

In 2001 and 2002 much was made of women buying SUVs. This is 2008, so for this journalist to believe as McCain does that women in this economy--with the roller coaster ride that is Wall Street and the growing number of unemployed--are the majority of drivers of SUVs is to believe the unbelievable. To use language like "soccer moms, "security moms," "mothers worried about filling up the sport-utility vehicle and paying for groceries," and "hot commodities" is to speak the language of the Republican party. Women are inviduals with individual lives and individual and collective concerns, such as equal pay, universal health care, among others. This journalist quotes Republican and Democratic analysts, and it is clear through these ... More »

This article is disappointing in that it uncritically repeats, several times, the canard that McCain is a maverick, an independent, who is not like other Republicans. Several commenters assert that this very quality about McCain may draw white women voters to his campaign, particularly as they experience anger over Hillary's loss to Obama. The other unfortunate aspect to this article is that it conflates white women with all women, thereby rendering black women, Hispanic women, immigrant women, and other groups of women--who have different interests from the older-white-female voting bloc--completely invisible. Other than that, it is fairly well sourced and present differing points of view, even though the author does not ... More »

If I read or see one more "journalist" extoll McCain's Maverick image I am going to retch.

This is a somewhat speculative article. It does not bring out the fact that it is way to early to understand what the disappointed Clinton supporters are going to do. It assumes they will disregard the issues and causes that Hillary supports and that the reason they supported her candidacy was because she is a woman, which is hardly a feminist approach.
