A Special Summer for John McCain and Barack Obama

But for all the talk about McCain wanting a "higher level of discourse," the bottom line is that he is begging to be rescued from the big problem his campaign has encountered: which is that the only thing their candidate is good at is town-hall meetings. Full Story »

I was not thrilled with this piece because it started out talking about McCain and veered off into Hillaryville. If Ms. Collins had stuck to McCain, it would have been a tighter and stronger piece. She could have used the Hillary material in another column.

The piece loses focus and becomes nothing more than a vehicle for a few one-liners. The first target was McCain. Then when the author ran out of McCain material, she turned to Hillary to unload the rest of her one-liners. She made one point: green is a terrible backdrop for people and is almost never used as an interior backdrop alone. Because television reproduces it so poorly, green is used as screens to electronically super other scenes over them–as in weather maps.

This is an opinion piece and so doesn't have the same requirements for objectivity that a new article would have. It puts McCain in a negative light, but it isn't all that harsh, and what she says about him is demonstrably true. In regards to the other facets of the article, Collins is fairly objective about Obama. However, it seems clear that she supported Clinton in the primaries.

Not well-sourced or terribly informative. But it was devastatingly accurate, and wickedly funny as a consequence. I enjoyed it enormously and laughed out loud. That, in itself is worth the read.

As op eds go it's an innocuous piece of fluff that, while stating her observations on McCain's speech and town hall meeting prowess, it misses the fact that these debates could in fact determine our next Commander in Chief. I say bring em on, NOW!

The article danced around but never came to any real conclusions, it was humorous in spots and that is a very good thing. John McCain does have parchment skin and his arm looks as if it is in a cast. He seems disingenuous and really at a loss for the correct thing to say.

It's an opinion piece, so it doesn't have to live up to the same objective standards a news story would. I happen to agree with the writer, so I like it.

Because the report reflects badly on one candidate, some will claim it is biased and unfair. It is. It reports the truth ad the truth, in this casereflects better upn one candidate than the other. Good journalism does not require the wrier to refrain from interpreting the facts, only that the facts are accurate and complete.
