I gave this piece a higher score than I normally would for importance because of an issue it raised without realizing it. Though the article noted that Senator Clinton's campaign team tried to run the race they'd used to win for her husband in 1992, at the very end there's sort of a throwaway line about relying on big-state victories. Though the British author may not realize it, that's been the Democratic strategy for at least a decade. And, except for Bill Clinton's campaign, it has failed the Party. Again, quite accurately--but perhaps unintentionally--Cornwall notes that Obama won by turning to the people. All the people. In all the states. His campaign didn't plan to sweep all before them in a few early contests and overwhelm opponents with big-money donors. They built grassroots infrastructure al over. They brought in a million small donors. And they planned for the long-run. This is a different way to campaign, and may be indicative of a true shift in American politics.
