The Big Question: Where did Hillary Clinton go wrong in her campaign to win the Presidency?

Her campaign team, much of it battlehardened in Bill Clinton's two successful White House runs, made many surprising errors. The biggest strategic mistake however, may have been to assume that everything would be wrapped up quickly. In the past that had indeed been the case - in 2004, John Kerry had basically won after his victories in the first two contests while even in 1992 her husband had effectively locked up the nomination after winning Illinois, ... This story has an interesting format: make the headings questions, and the information following, the answers. Clinton's campaign went off the rails when things stopped going according to the "grand" script. Obama's appeal to youth has been done before--notably by John F. Kennedy.

This story is notable for the concise, conversational way it packages a relatively complex and nuanced story. And it seems accurate and insightful. but making the complex simple is something modern journalists have to wrestle with in new ways for a new audience.

I gave this piece a higher score than I normally would for importance because of an issue it raised without realizing it. Though the article noted that Senator Clinton's campaign team tried to run the race they'd used to win for her husband in 1992, at the very end there's sort of a throwaway line about relying on big-state victories. Though the British author may not realize it, that's been the Democratic strategy for at least a decade. And, except for Bill Clinton's campaign, it has failed the Party. Again, quite accurately--but perhaps unintentionally--Cornwall notes that Obama won by turning to the people. All the people. In all the states. His campaign didn't plan to sweep all before them in a few early contests and ... More »

Largely an opinion presented as analysis. It is interesting to see what is said in the Independent, though he may have been rushed to perform his postmortem. He errors in saying Clinton won Texas, as do many in the US press; Obama's combination of popularly elected delegates and caucus delegates gave him the most delegates from Texas. He says Florida and Michigan did not help, but the rules and bylaws committee actually bent over backwards to give her votes the rules did not allow. Other damaging factors the article omits: a poor choice of campaign advisers, going negative in a primary, pre-existing negative opinions about Clinton, American distaste for dynasties, irrational misconstruing of facts, and insufficiently subtle ... A well reasoned and balanced analysis (with the advantage of hindsight). However it falls down in not addressing what many American's feel are serious character flaws including driving ambition and a sense of entitlement. On every comparison with Obama she came out more flawed and more "bush-lite" and "old Washington politics".

This is analysis not news and much of it has already been hashed out in American media sources, but I found it straightforward and well written and perhaps the most direct and likely answer I've seen so far on the gender discrimination question.
