Kill Bill: Clinton is targeted for character assassination

For all the damage-limitation exercises, the article, headlined "The Comeback Id" has once again stoked debate about Bill Clinton's legacy. His hopes of being the first First Gentleman appear to be in tatters, as Hillary's attempts to persuade superdelegates she is winning the popular vote fall on deaf ears. Doyle is a perceptive observer of the U.S. political scene, and this piece is no exception. I don't know that I agree with the "most respected" former president label. But certainly, after 8 years of George Bush, there's been a certain amount of nostalgia for the Clinton years. Among Clinton supporters, that still holds true. But, other than the true believers, I have to agree that the prospective first husband--while still capable of the unique combination of folksy charm and issue detail for which he is so famous--has been extraordinarily ham-fisted in this campaign. It is obvious, even from the cheap seats, how much he craves audience attention and applause. I never expected the campaign could keep him in the wings for long, and so it has proven.
