A Lone Blogger vs. the McCain-Hagee Alliance

On may 15, 2008 I posted a short video on Youtube of Pastor John Hagee, assembled with the free iMovie software that came with my three-year-old MacBook [view the video at the end of this article--ed.]. In just a few days Americans began to absorb the reality that Republican presidential candidate John McCain had sought and accepted an endorsement from a religious leader who'd asserted a divine mandate for the Holocaust and claimed that Jews themselves ... This is an interesting long account from a blogger who founded Talk2Action who says he alerted Americans to Hagee's Christian Zionism when he posted to YouTube May 15. This may be a bit of a stretch, as others wrote about Hagee on this topic before his post. There was, for instance a piece in Rolling Stone on May 1 (see link to page on Newstrust below.) And others may have a more nuanced description of the odd releationship between Hagee and Israel. See Steve Waldman of Beliefnet writing for the WSJ 's blog below. The writer, has, however, blogged extensively on Hagee and annotated his sermons. You can find his other material on this topic at http://www.talk2action.org/user/Bruce%20Wilson/stories

The story has a tinge of self-agrandisement, but shows perhaps some of the effect of bloggers in the world of new media. It includes a few factoids that were new to me, such as Hagee advocating an armed attack against Iran, that might help explain McCain's enchantment with the odd fellow. The bit about Henry Ford putting anti-jewish literature in cars as they left the factory is interesting. The most worthwhile observation is the free pass that the right wing corporate press gives to religious nut cases who use contorted holy writings to support racial hate positions.

This opinion piece has minimal journalistic value. The author takes a minor issue, and tries but fails to make it into a major issue. The author did not do the research needed to write credibly on what he calls the Christian Right. The author does not realize that tens of thousands of pastors have become supporters of one candidate or another, while in many cases holding far more extreme views than those claimed in this report. And he neglects to point out Rev Hagee's strong support for Israel.
