A thrilling but flawed campaign nears its end
The democratic process is not something that can, or should, be set in stone. To adjust the rules while a campaign is in progress, however, is to invite trouble. George Bush's own election showed how a combination of poor systems, ruthless ambition, sharp lawyers and a sympathetic court could subvert US democracy.
