A thrilling but flawed campaign nears its end

The democratic process is not something that can, or should, be set in stone. To adjust the rules while a campaign is in progress, however, is to invite trouble. George Bush's own election showed how a combination of poor systems, ruthless ambition, sharp lawyers and a sympathetic court could subvert US democracy. This is a good summary and wrap-up of the Democratic primary battle. It was certainly good practice for Mr. Obama, as Mrs. Clinton left no stones unturned. Mr. Obama wisely avoided Water- gate, cattle futures, stolen furniture from the White House, Vince Foster (not a suicide), and the current Peter Paul suite here in California concerning Mrs. Clinton's campaign fraud in her first senate race. Mr. McCain would not have been so kind.
