Using Carbon Dioxide to Extract Geothermal Energy

Carbon dioxide generated by power plants may find a second life as a working fluid to help recover geothermal heat from kilometers underground. Such a system would not only capture the carbon dioxide and keep it out of the atmosphere, it would also be a cost-effective way to use the greenhouse gas to generate new power. Full Story »

Interesting article on an ingenious plan to use carbon dioxide to generate geothermal energy -- and keep CO2 out of the atmosphere at the same time. This article is factual, well-sourced and provides good context about the pros and cons of this approach, which is still being tested.

This is early-stage technology. Fairley mentions some caveats and challenges. It's a pretty interesting piece, though I was left with several questions, including: How does the CO2 get from coal plant to geothermal well? What is the geo-chemical process of sequestration?
