MySpace: good, bad and ugly

The editorial board on the social networking site's legal woes and political activities.

Today The Times editorializes about the tragic suicide of Megan Meier, allegedly spurred by taunts from an adult using a made-up MySpace persona, and the courts' response to it. It's not the first time The Times has commented on MySpace and its prior legal entanglements, including from victims of sexual abuse who were tricked by MySpace "friends," much like Meier. I enjoyed the anecdotal style of this piece but was unsure about the overall message. Yes, some candidates are using social networks for their campaigns. Yes, some candidates are not using social networks for their campaigns. Yes, there are issues around privacy and sexual offenders. I am not sure whether or not this article is good journalism so much as it is one persons "opinion" about a really complex subject - open social networks.
