Growing Up Online

(Video - 60 mins. - Repeat) Jessica Hunter was a shy and awkward girl who struggled to make friends at school. Then, at age 14, she reinvented herself online as Autumn Edows, a goth artist and model. Outstanding documentary about the private worlds that kids are creating online and the risks, realities, and misconceptions of teenage self-expression on the Web. This program will be our Featured Video for our news hunt on the Internet. It is a 'must-see' on this important topic, which affects not just children, but all of us -- the Internet has already begun to change how we work, learn and play, in deeper ways than any of us might have imagined. The research is first-class, the sourcing is excellent, and the producers offer helpful context to help us better understand this new cultural phenomenon.

An interesting article for preliminary awareness, if the problem is new to you. Not much analysis of how widespread the problem is, not any breakdown of corollary behaviors or circumstances which can help generate problems or prevent problems from occurring. No view of alternative activities that counteract cyber-alienation. But then I just read the article, did not watch the whole video. ... OK, I succumbed to internet addiction and watched the whole thing. The individual stories in more depth are more compelling. PBS seems to be moving toward using the internet as a social awareness and action medium on the subject.

I liked this piece especially because it tries to make online life intelligible for the older generation who might not understand it as well.
